About
The fruit-themed series has been the subject of a Japanese anime and manga adaptation. The manga series was created by Natsuki Takaya and has sold over 20 million copies in the U.S. alone. It follows the events of the first eight manga volumes, and was directed by Akitaro Daichi. It features a wide-ranging cast of characters, from a childlike pig named Juice to a grown-up rabbit named Hatori.
The original Fruits Basket series was based on a popular Japanese children's game. Each child sat in a circle while a leader called out their names and assigned them a type of fruit. Once the fruit is called, participants must find a new seat to accommodate the new fruit. In the Fruits Basket anime manga, Tohru Honda does not receive a fruit, instead, her classmates assign her the name "onigiri."
